The Faces of the WASP Mosaic was created for the FlyGirls Traveling Exhibit. I wanted to ensure that every single WASP was represented in some way within the exhibit. Using my photograph of a sunset at Avenger Field, I added an AT-6 trainer and then uploaded the photographs and names of all 1,103 WASP, including Jacqueline Cochran, whose face is in the cockpit.
The final large-format mosaic was created by Picture Mosaics, which digitally merged all of the individual photographs into a single image. From a distance, the artwork appears to be an AT-6 taking off from Avenger Field at sunset. Up close, visitors discover that the image is composed entirely of the faces of the WASP. The completed mosaic was mounted on aluminum aircraft skin, complete with rivets, giving the display the appearance of an airplane panel.
Accompanying the mosaic was a printed Mosaic Key listing the location of every WASP by row and column, allowing visitors to find individual WASP within the artwork. Picture Mosaics also produced archival art prints of the mosaic, each accompanied by a copy of the Mosaic Key. These limited-edition prints were made available through the Wings Across America website in exchange for a donation to support our project.
WASP loved this print. Every single WASP was included at last 5 or 6 times. We made sure to pack the magnifying glass, as there were thousands small pictures in each print. Watching their faces light up as they would ‘find themselves’ in the print and then show their families was such a joy. Click the picutre and zoom in!
